The Nebraska City Veteran’s Memorial Building Project non-profit corporation is an organization of citizens formed solely to accomplish the revitalization and renovation of the Nebraska City Veteran’s Memorial Building located in the downtown area of Nebraska City. It honors the original organization which, within two years of it’s founding, raised the funds, completed the design, finished construction and dedicated the building on Armistice Day, November 11, 1929.
The building was in continuous use until 2007 when it was closed to the public because of expensive heating and cooling upgrades, and health and safety renovations that were required by the state Fire Marshall. The city had been unable to afford the necessary upgrades and the building remained empty and continued to deteriorate because of lack of maintenance.
The building has a large auditorium and stage that was used by the community over the years for city-wide events. The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars had a large meeting space that was dedicated for their use. School proms, alumni meetings and dinners, Red Cross blood drives all used the building. A Senior Citizen Center was located in the building which served daily lunches. The building was equipped with a full commercial size kitchen to handle large community events. The Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Rotary, women’s clubs and sportsmen association as well as other city organizations all used the building.
The Nebraska City Veteran’s Memorial Building Project non-profit corporation is the vehicle by which funds are to be gathered to accomplish the revival of this historic community building. The non-profit corporation is independent of the city government. No city, county, or state employees or elected officials serve on the board of directors for the organization. The non-profit corporation is entirely a citizen effort that will look at a variety of options for funding to finance the project including individual donations, private foundation grants as well as federal, state and local grants and loans.
Members of the Nebraska City Veteran’s Memorial Building Project Board in cooperation with the Nebraska State Historical Society completed the nomination to place the Veteran’s Memorial building on the Historic Register. We received notification from The United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service that on March 22, 2016 the Memorial building was officially entered in the National Register of Historic Places. This designation is important because it can help open funding sources that otherwise would be unavailable.
Several members of the Nebraska City Veteran’s Memorial Building Project board prepared and submitted on behalf of the city of Nebraska City a grant application to the United States Department of Agriculture to assist with funding a strategic plan for the renovation of the Memorial building. Notification has recently been received that the grant application has been approved. The Nebraska City Veteran’s Memorial Building Project Board now has the task of raising matching funds for the grant so the project can move forward.
