Description

Gaslight Village is named after the flickering gas lamps that line the street of the popular neighborhood of East Grand Rapids. This succinct retail corridor is flush with retail, dining, and other business that flourish in close proximity to Reed’s Lake.

By the 1870s this area was a popular destination for the people of Grand Rapids and the surrounding areas to come and spend the day swimming, boating, and picnicking. These activities gave rise to the most remarkable historical feature, Ramona Park, an amusement park owned and operated by the Grand Rapids Street Railway Company. This destination operated between 1897 and 1955. In fact, Former President Gerald R. Ford even worked at a concession stand there.

In the early 1950s, the community gathered to shutter the park and modernize it into a new commercial center and residential apartments. Where the Jack Rabbit Derby Racer wooden rollercoaster once was is now a bustling mix of shops and restaurants like Bowdies Chophouse, Clean Juice, Athleta, and LoveSac, amongst others. Above the street level business is a vibrant mix of offices and executive offices.
In a neighborhood of socializing, exercising, and family activities, one can often see people zipping through on bikes, scooters, and on foot as the community recharges in this popular East Grand Rapids area.
