Originally built in 1891, the Ghost Building is one of downtown Denver's most fascinating buildings. It is the only surviving commercial structure of noted turn-of-the-century Denver architect William Lang, who designed the Romanesque low-rise for early Colorado pioneer A.M. Ghost. In 1979, it was moved brick-by-brick from its original location to save it from being razed for a parking lot. Using an elaborate numbering system, the 1,495 pieces of North Dakota sandstone were saved and later re-assembled at the corner of 18th and Stout Streets. The Ghost Building now looks out on the old U.S. Post Office Building, a white marble neoclassical design that was renovated to house the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Ghost Building's graceful style and architectural elegance is an important part of the city, particularly juxtaposed among many steel and glass high-rises. After purchasing the building in 1997, Frances Koncilja designed and renovated the third floor to maintain the 19th century character of the space with the use of beveled glass, nine foot ceilings, mahogany woodwork, granite and regional American art.
