We visited Roosevelt Island earlier this month for the first time in close to 20 years. It is still beautiful and peaceful, and now has its own subway stop, as well as the tram to Manhattan and bridge to Queens. While there, we took a hardhat tour around The Octagon, a 500-unit “green” rental project under development by architects Becker + Becker. The project consists of two wings stretching out from the central, octagon-shaped former mental hospital that is being beautifully renovated using designs by David Rockwell, into a lobby, health club and public rooms. There’s also an outdoor pool, tennis courts, its own underground garage and a full-day day care center, all abutting public landscaped spaces along the East River. We drooled when we saw the river and Manhattan views, even from the lowest floors. 100 of the apartments are being offered first come first served --with no lottery --at lower rents to families that make 150 percent of the area median, or nearly $100,000.
